Storage Tips from All Safe Self Storage

At All Safe Self Storage our goal is to help you keep your items safe and secure. Here are tips for safely packing your items for storage in either our Lake in the Hills or McHenry locations.

HAVE A PLAN AND THINK VERTICAL

Were you great at that Tetris game? Here’s your chance to prove it! Planning your storage space will save you time and money. Renting a space too small or too large can be frustrating with a possible extra move or wasted space you don’t need that you are paying for.

We suggest placing items that you may need to access often in the front of your unit. If you plan or need to frequently use the space, a larger space may be more convenient than one packed to capacity.

To increase accessibility, you may want to consider using shelving to maximize the vertical space in your unit. Remember to stack larger boxes at the bottom and smaller ones on top to avoid falling items and leave a small space between the wall and your storage items to allow for ventilation.

It is also recommended that you allow 6 inches at the front of the unit in case of shifting boxes or weather conditions. Accessing your unit for just a few minutes in the rain or snow can leave your boxes vulnerable to damage.

USE PALLETS
We supply pallets at no cost to you and recommend that you use them especially under cardboard boxes. Concrete floors create condensation throughout the year, which is absorbed by boxes. Adequate airflow is vital to insuring your items especially any textiles remain unharmed. Donations of gently used pallets are always appreciated.

SPECIAL ITEMS
A refrigerator or freezer should be thoroughly dry and stored with its door slightly ajar. Make sure that stoves and cooking equipment are cleaned before they are stored. Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored together in empty trashcans. Stack extra cans inside one another.

Bicycles and other metal items will rust over time if not protected. To hinder rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil. Sofas and love seats can be stored on end to save floor space remembering to use pallets and cotton coverings. You may place a protective waterproof cover under the end on the floor. If you stand mattresses on end, be sure to "prop" them up and use a mattress bag.

QUALITY LOCK
Security means quality. While you may use any lock you like, we highly recommend a round disc lock for your unit. They are much harder to break or cut keeping your valuables as safe as possible. We offer disk locks with 2 keys for $10 dollars.

INSURANCE PROTECTION
Make an estimate of the replacement value of each item you plan to store and check with your insurance carrier to see if storage insurance is covered on one of your policies, just in case of an unforeseen accident or damage. All Safe Self Storage does not have insurance on your stored items.

READ YOUR LEASE
For your protection, we provide you with a written agreement. Please read it thoroughly and ask questions. There are prohibited storage goods that are not permitted within our storage facility and will not be allowed. Please refer to your contract and ask questions before storing questionable items.

Make note of your payment date, as we do not send invoices. You will be asked to provide us with both an address and phone number for contact purposes please keep these up to date so if an emergency arises we may contact you. Please notify us in writing of any changes made.
